    There are many “hacks” that I employ daily. Some are specific to recorder and would require more than a paragraph to explain. But, a good practice with a metronome is to play with it on the off-beat. Or I play with it in a rhythm that has me thinking passagework in a different way. For example, if I have a bunch of sixteenth notes in 3/4 time, I do them in groups of four triplets per measure. The opening of Brandenburg IV can be practiced by grouping the sixteents in three or four. It’s fun to play a piece in 6/8 using three beats per measure or, conversely, play a piece in 3/4 with the ticker on the dotted quarter. So many possibilities.
